The Royal Collections Gallery will host an exhibition from 16 December to 5 April 2026 that brings together a selection of objects related to leisure and learning that were part of the childhood of the Spanish monarchy between the mid-19th century and the first third of the 20th century.
A toy is considered to be an object intrinsically linked to a story. It tells who bought it and for whom, when it was purchased, whether it was a gift, if it has been passed down through several generations or who it has been shared with. In the same way as games, toys have an emotional component that takes us back to our childhood and experiences that were often shared with others.
Reconstructing the everyday life of past eras is not always easy, especially when it comes to the private sphere. However, through photographs, letters, diaries and objects that have been preserved, it is possible to explore this world and draw conclusions about how these toys were used.
In this way, the exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to discover pieces of National Heritage that are perhaps not very well known, which provide an insight into the everyday life of royal childhood, as they are recognisable and familiar objects.
