The French director, Thomas Jolly, accompanied by Carlo Rizzi from Italy, directs a five-act version of the opera based on William Shakespeare's drama, with music by Charles-François Gounod. This show can be seen at the Teatro Real on 27, 28, 30 and 31 May and 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 13 June 2026.
The show has an excellent cast: Nadine Sierra, Javier Camarena, Ismael Jordi and Laurent Naouri, among others, and singers retell this story of impossible love. With a libretto in French by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, it was premièred in 1867 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris (France) and moved the family conflict to a story centred on the passion and tenderness of its characters, highlighting its four love duets, one of the main features of this play.
It features Romeo and Juliet, two young people belonging to rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets, in the city of Verona. Despite the hatred between their families, they fall deeply in love and secretly marry. However, a series of misunderstandings, revenge and fatalities leads to a tragic outcome: they both die, reaffirming the devastating power of hatred and love with their deaths.
