José Luis Sixto (The Choirboys, the Musical) is directing an adaptation by Adrián Perea (Los Chicos de Baker-Miller, Buenas Chuches y Buena Suerte or Ahora que nos dejan hablar) of the famous musical by Jonathan Larson which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. This production can be seen in the Sala Guirau (Guirau Hall) at the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa from 23 December to 25 January 2026, from Tuesday to Sunday.
About to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its première, this iconic musical, winner of the Tony and Pulitzer Awards, is returning to the stage with a new production that seeks to bridge the gap between New York in the 1990s and modern society.
Its author, Jonathan Larson, died on 25 January 1996, the night before the première, turning his work into a generational legacy. The authenticity of his vision made such an impression on audiences that Rent was on Broadway for 12 years, becoming one of the longest-running musicals ever.
The play, inspired by Puccini's La Bohème, portrays a year in the life of a group of young artists who faced precariousness, the search for identity, friendship and love, while HIV looms as an omnipresent shadow. Characters like Mark, Roger, Mimi, Angel, Collins, Maureen or Joanne represent a community marked by rebellion and a sense of urgency, with a message that remains universal: measure your life in love.
This new version portrays the piece from a contemporary perspective, respecting its essence but exploring new interpretations. More than a tribute, this production seeks to enter into dialogue with contemporary audiences and remind them that the issues that shook the 1990s (gentrification, queer community resistance networks, the health crisis and the need for transformative art) continue to resonate today.
