The Champions League Round of Sixteen knock-out phase will bring Ancelotti and Simeone’s sides against each other in an exciting derby. The first leg match will be played on 4 March at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, where the Real Madrid will welcome Atlético de Madrid.
The winner of this Round of Sixteen knock-out phase, which will be determined over two matches, will face the winner of the match between PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal Football Club in the quarter-finals.
Atlético de Madrid completed the first phase of the Champions in fifth place with a favourable balance of six victories to two defeats. The Argentinean striker, Julián Álvarez, is the top goal scorer of the season with 17 goals. Real Madrid has got through to the Round of Sixteen after having beaten Manchester City in the second leg match with a spectacular hat-trick by Mbappé.
In terms of match history, Real Madrid and Atlético have faced each other six times in this competition, most recently in the semi-finals of the 2016-2017 season, which was won by Real Madrid with an overall score of 4-2.
