Monet. Masterpieces from the Musée Marmottan Monet

CentroCentro cultural centre is hosting the first major exhibition in Madrid devoted to the French painter Claude Monet, the father of impressionism, from 21 September to 25 February. Featuring more than 50 masterpieces from the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the exhibition will trace the entire artistic career of the Impressionist master through the works to which the painter himself was most attached and which he safeguarded in his home in Giverny until his death.

The works on display include exceptional paintings, such as Portrait of Michel Monet Wearing a Hat with a Pompon (1880), The Train in the Snow. The Locomotive (1875) or London. Parliament. Reflections on the Thames (1905), along with large format paintings, such as his captivating and famous Water Lilies (1917-1920) or his evanescent Wisteria (1919-1920). They all come from the Musée Marmottan Monet, which houses the most important collection of works by the artist, thanks to a donation made by his son Michel in 1966.

Organised by CentroCentro and Arthemisia in collaboration with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the exhibition will be curated by Sylvie Carlier, curator of the Musée Marmottan Monet, and co-curated by the art historian, Marianne Mathieu, and Aurélie Gavoille, assistant curator at the Musée Marmottan Monet, who will be responsible for the texts that will accompany the selection of works that make up the exhibition.

Claude-Oscar Monet (Paris, 14 November 1840 - Giverny, 5 December 1926) is considered to be one of the founding fathers of French Impressionism. Indeed, the very name of the artistic movement is linked to that of one of his works, Impression, Sunrise (1872). In Monet’s paintings, nature is portrayed as it is, ever-changing, so using the same subject does not mean that the same painting is reproduced.
