On 10 ,11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 26 and 27 November, the Teatro Real will host a new production of one of the great masterpieces of the lyrical repertoire and the first collaboration between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his famous librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte. The show will be performed in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles.
On this occasion, the staging is the responsibility of the renowned Canadian director, Robert Carsen, who has taken on this score for the first time, in a production in which philosophical reflection on power and its abuse goes hand in hand with the ingenuity of comedy.
The cast brings together some of the leading voices on today’s opera scene, with Mattia Olivieri, Carles Pachon, Olga Kulchynska, Elsa Dreisig and Sara Blanch leading a cast that is rounded off with Giulia Semenzato, Luca Micheletti, Germán Olvera, Cecilia Molinari and Lucía Caihuela, among others. The musical conductor is Stefano Montanari.
The action takes place in the Almaviva Palace where Figaro and Susanna are finalising the preparations for their wedding while attempting to thwart the intentions of the Count, who is set on seducing the young maid. Mozart unravels a series of entanglements, disguises and misunderstandings in which the Countess participates in order to expose her husband’s infidelity. The showdown takes place in the palace garden when the masks come off and the Count apologises and the wedding can finally be held.
Based on the second piece of the theatre trilogy by Pierre-Augustin de Beaumarchais, this opera continues the story from The Barber of Seville. The opera version of The Barber of Seville, composed by Gioachino Rossini, will close the 2026-2027 season of the Madrid theatre, reinforcing the link between two major titles from the repertoire inspired by the Beaumarchais theatre universe.
