Madrid Art Deco, 1925: The Style of a New Era

The Conde Duque Cultural Centre is hosting an exhibition in the Sala Sur exhibition hall from 6 June to 2 November, which analyses the evolution of the Art Deco style in Madrid and its use in architecture, fashion, film or advertising. This is all presented through a selection of more than 50 pieces from the López-Trabado and Carlos Velasco collections as well as loans from institutions.

During this period, the city of Madrid was in the midst of a profound social, cultural, economic and political upheaval, hosting works that were fundamental to its transformation. All these changes gave the city a new identity: the first metro lines, the expansion of the Gran Vía, urban transport and the automobile boom.

This exhibition seeks to show and reflect on the importance of Art Deco in the construction of a new cultural, urban and social identity that defined the new century. Visitors will be able to see pieces from the López-Trabado and Carlos Velasco collections, as well as loans from institutions like the National Museum of Decorative Arts, the Telefónica Foundation, Madrid Municipal Printworks, the History Museum of Madrid and the Madrid Digital Memory Library.

In this way, visitors will be taken back to 1920s Madrid, where Art Deco invaded everything from the construction of large buildings and interior decoration to everyday objects. Advertising in magazines and performing arts, such as the cinema, theatre and cabaret presented this style. A new fashion defined in its aesthetics and identity aimed at the new needs that arose in this period as women entered the labour market.
