Juan López

The Vaults Room at the Conde Duque Cultural Centre will host an exhibition by the artist Juan López from 2 October to 10 January 2027. It is an ambitious site-specific installation that turns the space’s architecture into a language of its own through sound, images and sculptures.

In this installation, Juan López (Alto Maliaño, Cantabria, 1979) does not limit himself to occupying the space, but rather converses with it, deciphering the marks, crevices and imprints on the asphalt and bricks as if they were signs of urban calligraphy. The exhibition focuses specifically on the arches in the room, which are structural connectors that the artist transforms through a semi-transparent resin skin. These elements interact with laser sensors that translate the protrusions on the walls into sound waves, modulating audio pieces created with Anna Dot, Marc Vives and Carlos Amorales.

The exhibition, curated by Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo, acts as a choral voice that connects the building’s disciplinary past with the present, metaphorically recapturing the echo and neighing of the original horses and their industrial replacement. The exhibition is rounded off with a documentary section that converses with historical figures like Rachel Whiteread, Mirta Dermisache and Michael Eizher.
