The flamenco dancer, Israel Galván will be performing a contemporary flamenco show at the Centro Danza Matadero (CDM) from 12 to 14 June, into which he will pour his personal memories and his relationship with sevillanas and the Seville Fair.
The show revisits episodes from his childhood related to the April Fair in Seville, where he took part in competitions but never won due to his free-spirited and unconventional style. Accompanied by Los Sones de Olivares and by the guitar and vocals of María Marín, Galván creates a piece in which dance, music and performance are interlinked with a distinct sense of humour.
Dressed in a short 1960s-style flamenco suit, the artist enters into a stage space that swings between a popular festival and an intimate exploration of his roots. Galván uses this show to confront a personal paradox: despite having accumulated numerous awards throughout his career, he has never managed to win a “sevillanas” competition. This tension between recognition and frustration becomes the creative driving force, leading to a performance that challenges the norms of partner dancing and calls for individual freedom within tradition.
Born in Seville in 1973, Israel Galván is a flamenco dancer and choreographer who stands out for his complicated dance steps accompanied by his amazing foot movements. He has won many prizes, including the Vicente Escudero Prize at the Cordoba National Flamenco Art Competition in 1995, the Desplante Prize at the Cante de las Minas de La Unión International Festival in 1996 and the 1st Young Performers Competition Prize at the 9th Seville Flamenco Biennial in 1996.
Furthermore, he won the 2005 National Dance Prize in the category of creation and three Max Awards in 2014 (Best Choreography, Best Performance and Best Show) for his show, Lo real.
