The renowned Israeli conductor, Daniel Oren will be leading one of the most intense and passionate works in the verismo repertoire on 7 and 10 January at the Teatro Real. The opera was composed by Umberto Giordano based on the drama of the same name by Arturo Colautti, whose writing also inspired the famous Tosca.
This latest production is headed by the soprano, Sonya Yoncheva in the leading role, accompanied by Sabina Puértolas, Luciano Ganci and George Petean, among other performers, as well as the Teatro Real Resident Orchestra and Choir. The show will be performed in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles.
The story presents Fedora, a Russian princess deeply affected by the murder of her fiancé. Convinced that Loris Ipanov is to blame, she resolves to get carefully planned revenge. To do so, she organises an elegant ball in Paris in order to lure him there and unmask him. However, as she moves towards the man she thought was her enemy, the truth starts to shatter the certainties that had fuelled her pain.
During this encounter, Loris confesses that he had killed Fedora’s fiancé, but he did so after discovering his infidelity. The revelation changes the main character’s entire perception as she realises that the man she loved was not the innocent victim she had believed him to be. The drama reaches an even greater dimension when Fedora discovers that she had reported Loris’ family to the authorities, blinded by her desire for revenge, leading indirectly to the death of his mother and brother.
The devastating news leaves Loris grief-stricken while Fedora faces the burden of her guilt. Unable to bear the consequences of her actions, she decides to poison herself and dies while asking for forgiveness. This is an opera full of extreme passion, in which love, guilt and tragedy are intertwined in one of the most moving chapters of Italian verismo.
