Vallehermoso Stadium will be hosting the European Athletics Team Championships from 27 to 29 June 2025 (originally scheduled for 2023), becoming the first international championship to be held at this venue since it reopened in 2019.
The European Athletics Council unanimously chose the Spanish capital as the venue for the former Superliga. This will be the third time that Europe’s highest level of team athletics competition will be held in Spain. Madrid hosted the event 25 years ago in 1996, and Malaga was the chosen venue in 2006.
Under the slogan “Connecting Athletics with the Future”, the organisation, made up of Madrid City Council, the Community of Madrid and the Spanish Royal Athletics Federation, has designed a proposal focused on new technologies and trends as differentiating elements for the international projection and appeal.
There will also be an impressive Opening Ceremony in the centre of Madrid, which will actively promote the city. Furthermore, the pole vaulting competitions will take place outside the stadium, in the Plaza de Oriente, where athletes will jump next to the Royal Palace (on June 26, a day before the start of the competition at Vallehermoso Stadium). The aim is to bring this sport closer to the general public whilst promoting Madrid's historical heritage throughout the continent.
The Championship was going to be held in 2023, but as the different leagues of the European Team Athletics Championships were eventually integrated into the 2023 European Games (held from 23 to 25 June in Silesia, Poland), it will finally be held in 2025.
The Vallehermoso Stadium is a partially covered venue with capacity to seat 10,000 spectators, a 400-metre track with 8 lanes whose curves are of a single radius of 36.5 metres and its surface is made out of synthetic material. It was opened in 1961 and demolished in 2008, whereby it was rebuilt in 2017. Since reopening its doors in 2019, it has become the epicentre of Spanish athletics and has held major competitions, such as the Villa de Madrid International Athletics Meeting and the 100th edition of the Spanish Championship.
