Easter Exhibition

For the second year running, Madrid is welcoming an exhibition featuring the nineteen religious brotherhoods and guilds that bring Madrid’s Easter Week celebrations to life every year. The exhibition, located in the Plaza Mayor (from 19 March to 5 April), takes you on a journey through five centuries of history and devotion. It tells the history of religious brotherhoods and guilds, and the statues and processions that have forged the unique celebration of Easter in the Spanish capital. 

The exhibition explores Catholic worship and devotion in Madrid, from Puente Vallecas to Carabanchel, by way of Delicias, Villaverde and Las Letras, evoking the solemnity of the “Archicofradía del Santo Entierro”, the venerated image of Jesús Nazareno de Medinaceli, whose brotherhood was founded in 1710, which counted the royal family among its devoted members from the beginning, or the 420 years that separate the oldest brotherhood in the capital, “La Real Congregación de Esclavos de María Santísima de los Siete Dolores, Cristo de la Agonía y Descendimiento de la Santa Cruz” and “La Borriquita de Madrid”, which announces Palm Sunday marking the start of Holy Week.

Visitors have a unique opportunity to admire the testimony, heritage, cultural and religious value of the history of the brotherhoods that have forged, century after century, the soul of our Holy Week, earning them a privileged place in the traditions of Madrid.
