Simeone’s red and white team will play its first Champions League match in front of its fans at home against the English side. The second match of the group phase of the Champions League 2026/27 will be at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday 13 October.
Atlético de Madrid and Manchester United will face each other again in the Champions League, having last played in the Round of Sixteen in the 2021/22 season, resulting in a 1-1 draw at the Metropolitano and a red and white 0-1 victory at Old Trafford, which earned Simeone’s team a place in the next round.
This season, the UEFA Champions League will follow the same format, with 36 teams participating in the league phase, each playing eight matches against eight different teams. On completion of this stage, the top eight teams will go directly into the Round of Sixteen.
The teams ranked 9th to 24th will go to two-leg play-offs. Finally, those ranked 25th to 36th will be eliminated from the competition.
