From 13 September to 21 January, photographer Sebastião Salgado presents an exhibition at the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, designed to show the beauty and raise awareness of the fragility of the planet's main ecosystem. This project, which has captivated more than 1.4 million visitors worldwide, captures the grandeur of nature and its relationship with twelve indigenous communities in remote rainforest locations.
This exhibition is presented in an exhibition space of 1,000m2, in which the famous Brazilian photographer, Prince of Asturias Prize winner in 1998, presents a multi-sensory experience that enables visitors to immerse themselves in the exuberance and sounds of the forest through more than 200 large format photographs, seven films and a soundtrack especially created by the musician Jean-Michel Jarre.
Designed and curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado, Amazônia is the result of the photographer spending seven years living with twelve indigenous communities, a true immersive and multi-sensory experience that enables visitors to immerse themselves in the heart of the forest thanks to the atmosphere of the natural sounds of the Amazon, captured by the Ethnographic Museum of Geneva.
Sebastião Salgado is a socio-documentary photographer and photojournalist born in Aimorés (Brazil) in 1944, who has specialised in immortalising the forests and different ecosystems all over the world. For all of this, he was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Award for Humanitarian Photography in 1982, the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in 1989. In conjunction with his wife Lélia Wanick, he is also the co-founder of the Terra Institute, an organisation dedicated to reforesting natural spaces, which has recovered more than 297 species of native trees.
