This mountain pass with an altitude of 1,858 metres is the highest in the Guadarrama Sierrra and one of the highest in Spain.
The pass project was developed in 1778 by the royal architect, Juan de Villanueva, although it was not opened to traffic until ten years later, during the reign of Carlos IV. For a long time, it was a much travelled by kings and ministers who crossed the Sierra to La Granja de San Ildefonso.
In addition, this mountain houses the ski resort Puerto de Navacerrada, where people can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as major ski-mountaineering events, marathons, and mountain races.
