This mountain pass crosses the Sierra de Guadarrama and links the province of Segovia with the Region of Madrid.
At an altitude of 1511 metres, it is one of the most important mountain passes in the Sierra de Guadarrama and has been used since the days of the Roman Empire. Although the mountain is officially named after the village of Guadarrama, because the Madrid side is located within the municipal district of that locality, it is also known as 'Alto del León' because of the statue of a stone lion you can see on its summit.
