After its closure in March 2020, the former alternative theatre El Montacargas reopened in February 2023 with a new name and new management, offering a multidisciplinary programme featuring proposals from the musical and performing arts, as well as a permanent exhibition space and a canteen.
This venue, 210 m2 in size, is divided into three distinct spaces: La Cantina, on the ground floor, where you can have a drink while you enjoy exhibitions and small scale concerts and gigs; La Sala Escénica, which has been fully remodelled as a black box, for different kinds of performances and performance art, meetings, conferences, workshops and screenings, etc.; and El Estudio, on the top floor, for cerebral activities, training, meetings, recordings, etc...
Nuevo Montacargas open four days a week, offering not only a varied programme, but also workshops and other activities for all audiences. The different spaces can also be rented for private events. On Sunday mornings there will be matinees for family and children’s shows.
Built in 1950, the three-story building that houses this venue was formerly a sweet factory and, since 1993, an independent theatre. Dating from that time is the unique mural on the façade created by Miguel Brayda. A key cultural venue in the neighbourhood, its name is a nod to the forklift (montacargas in Spanish) that it housed during its industrial period.
