Museo de la Hermandad del Refugio

Located inside the Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes, in the Barrio de Malasaña neighbourhood, this museum looks back at the 400 years of history of the Hermandad del Refugio, a charitable association founded in 1615 by Father Bernardino de Antequera to assist the needy and shelter abandoned children.

The exhibition features a collection of pieces and objects that show the history of charity and social assistance in each era, as well as paintings and portraits by eminent painters, most of them affiliated with royal patronage.

The collection includes three exceptional paintings: Inmaculada Concepción, by Claudio Coello; Magdalena Penitente, by Mateo Cerezo, and Inmaculada Concepción, by José Antolínez. It also contains a large number of textile pieces, from priestly chasubles to funeral suits from past centuries, and a wide variety of religious objects and liturgical items donated by the Monarchy and the Church to the Hermandad del Refugio.

In addition, outside the Museum's galleries, they have a historical archive containing all the minutes and admission documents of its members from 1618 to the present day.

It is one of the few archives that has remained intact in Madrid, preserved from looting and damage during the War of Independence and the Civil War.
