Casa de la Moneda Museum

From January 2, 2025, the Museum will be partially closed for works, affecting the section from the Byzantine World to the House of Austria. The Roberto Michel, Medal, Graphic Arts, Stamps, and Philately sections will also be closed.

Casa de la Moneda Museum is considered one of the most important museums in the world in its genre. The wealth of its collections, its extensive facilities and the scientific development in the research and cultural sphere generated from here, make the museum a unique place to discover the universe of money.

Its origins date back to the 18^th century and are closely linked to Tomás Francisco Prieto, Master Engraver to the Mints of King Charles III, and the Director of Intaglio Engraving at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He also founded a School of Engraving in 1771, where the artists who would later ply their skill in the Mints of Spain and the Indies were trained. 

The Museum invites the public to journey through the history of money from its origins, discovering the different forms of money production throughout history. Visitors to its rooms can see important coinage, stamp and pre-stamp collections, notes and other methods of payment, lotteries and games, a historical library, an art collection, machinery and manufacturing tools used by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda, the Spanish mint and stamp factory.
