This sculpture located in Calle Concepción Jerónima, remembers the former lamplighters of Madrid, a profession that is extinct today but was typical in the 19th century when the streets were lit with oil lamps which were switched on and off and maintained by workers in this trade.
Initially, the statue was installed in the Plaza del Carmen, when its remodelling work was completed in 1999. In 2011, it was moved to its current location, in front of the former Municipal press building.
This bronze piece is the work of the Madrid sculptor, Félix Hernando, author of another two sculptures which can also be seen on the streets of Madrid, such as the Reader in Calle San Justo (in front of the Iván de Vargas Library), the Madrid Sweeper (Plaza de Jacinto Benavente), and another Reader in Plaza de la Paja.
