"Petróleos Porto Pi" Petrol Station

Located in the Chamberí area, this is for many one of the works that mark the beginning of modern Spanish architecture. Built by the architect Casto Fernández-Shaw in 1927, it is a perfect example of Rationalist architecture in Madrid.

The sparse elements that made up the work - a loudspeaker tower like an acoustic lighthouse, evoking a naval air; and a light protective awning like the wing of an aeroplane, reminiscent of the aviation industry - created a futuristic image applied to the Madrid car industry in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 70s of the same century, the petrol station was demolished and it later had to be restored to its original state.
