Cementerio Británico

Since 1854, the Carabanchel district has been home to this small cemetery where people of different nationalities and religious beliefs are buried. It was originally created to bury English citizens living in Madrid and could not be buried in Spanish cemeteries as they were Christians rather than Catholics. 

This unique graveyard, owned by the British Government, consists of around 600 graves surrounded by lush gardens in the purest English style.  They include those of some of the leading figures from the history of Madrid, such as William Parish, director of Circo Price between 1880 and 1916 and the father’s son-in-law, Thomas Price, an Irish horse tamer, belonging to a long line of acrobats; Margarita Kearney Taylor, first owner of the Embassy tea room; the Frenchman, Emilio Huguenin Lhardy, creator of the famous Lhardy restaurant, and some of the members of the Loewe family.

The cemetery has an audio guide in Spanish and English via a card, for which a donation of € 3 is requested. Once acquired, it can be used in subsequent visits to the cemetery.
