Built in 2013, this Neo-byzantine style temple, headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church in Madrid, has been considered to be a cathedral since 2019. The impressive and stylish building, which rises up on a plot of 756 square metres, has five gold domes crowned by five crosses, raised on some white turrets.
Close to the Pinar del Rey metro station, the Orthodox Cathedral offers different religious services throughout the week, for example prayers on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 pm, as well as Evening Vespers every Saturday at 6pm and Mass (Divine Liturgy with Eucharist and Communion) for Orthodox church attendees on Sunday mornings at 10am. In addition, on Saturdays there is a free guided tour in Spanish at 5pm.
The church draws not only Russians in Madrid but also those from other Slavic countries, so when the Eucharist is held on Sundays, some of the prayers are recited in Spanish, as the language understood by most parishioners of the Cathedral.
In addition, once every 2 months and always on Saturdays, the Orthodox Mass is held entirely in Spanish, to make it more accessible to all Orthodox parishioners who do not understand the language in which worship is usually held (known as Church Slavonic, very similar to the Russian language.) To know when Mass is being said in Spanish, check the service times on the Cathedral website.
