This small chapel worshipping San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of Madrid, is not very well known for many tourists and residents of Madrid. Located at Calle del Pretil de Santisteban, 3 in the heart of the La Latina neighbourhood, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest by the Community of Madrid in 2000, thanks to its priceless historical value. It can be visited from 6pm to 7pm on the third Saturday of each month.
The site where the chapel stands, which dates back to the 12th century and belonged to the Vargas family, used to be the stable where San Isidro kept his animals. Inside, which is just over 45 square metres, a neoclassical altarpiece of San Isidro and Santa María de la Cabeza stands out, as well as paintings that portray the saint’s miracles and a copy of Velazquez’s Christ in original size by José Luis de Santamaría.
This space is currently managed by the Royal, Very Illustrious and Primitive Congregation of San Isidro Naturales de Madrid.
