The story of Sastrería Cornejo is a story of cinema, television and theatre, both in Spain and beyond our borders. The firm’s creations have won Oscars, Goyas, Césars and Baftas.
Their story begins in 1920 in a tailoring shop on Cava Baja, where Mr and Mrs Cornejo started renting out a small collection of costumes they had received as a wedding gift. Years later, they moved to Calle Magdalena, in Lavapiés, where they began working on productions for Spanish theatre, zarzuela, revue and cinema.
But it was in the 1950s when the American producer Samuel Bronston landed in Madrid and began filming countless movies in Spain (including 55 Days at Peking, Lawrence of Arabia, and Doctor Zhivago), commissioning Cornejo to supply all the costumes.
In subsequent decades, the film and theatre industry, both nationally and internationally, continued to rely on the firm’s expertise, and they have been involved in huge hit productions such as Shakespeare in Love, The Girl of Your Dreams, Gladiator, Alatriste, Agora, Elizabeth, The Favourite and While at War.
At the beginning of the 21st century, they moved to a large four-storey building away from the city centre, in the Ciudad Lineal district, where they store over a million costumes, footwear and accessories from all eras. Additionally, they handcraft all kinds of garments that are made bespoke for each project entrusted to them.
It is not possible to visit the tailor's shop unless it is to commission a piece from them, so they provide an email for people interested in their work or for fashion design students to request a visit to their premises: info@sastreriacornejo.com.
