The bookshop and publishing house Reus was founded in 1852 in Peligros St. by the jurist from Alicante José Reus. He specialized in Law publications although Art or History books were also found there. The publishing project sought and still seeks to contribute to the creation, dissemination and integration of the major currents of legal thought by translating the great European authors and publishing Spanish and Latin American authors.
Throughout its long history, it has published more than 5,000 monographs on legal topics and is probably the oldest legal publishing house in the Spanish language. It became so successful that it was listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange at the start of the 20th century.
It published most of the leading Spanish jurists of the 19th and 20th centuries, without which its authors would find it very difficult to explain the contemporary legal history of Spain. After the civil war, many of its authors went into exile and, despite its enormous financial strength and the importance and success of some of its works, such as Castán and its export power, it ended up plunging into a terrible crisis that almost led to its closure.
Under new management, it has entered a third era since 1999, which has now been reinforced with the launch of its website.
