In the early 1900s, a couple from Alicante, Francisco Guilabert and Francisca Segura, opened this historic horchata kiosk on Calle Cedaceros, near Puerta del Sol. Their children later moved it to Plaza de las Cortes, where it stayed until the Spanish Civil War. After the war, in 1939, the family returned to Madrid and reopened in Plaza del Carmen. Finally, in 1944, they settled in their current location in the heart of the Salamanca neighbourhood.
Throughout its long history, the family has always made their drinks by hand. In the early days, horchata was prepared in the kiosk itself using a cast-iron press to squeeze ground tiger nuts with water. The resulting liquid was sweetened with sugar and cooled in large glass jugs. Today, the process is carried out in a small workshop that meets all modern health and safety standards.
In addition to horchata, the kiosk also serves traditional fartons pastries from Valencia (perfect for dipping), coffee, classic ice creams from Alicante (including, of course, horchata ice cream), soft drinks, beer, water, snacks, packets of tiger nuts, and smoothies.
Still run by descendants of the original founders, the kiosk has welcomed many famous faces over the years, from cultural icons to political figures.
