Guitarras Ramírez was founded in 1882 by José Ramírez de Galarreta y Planell, the maestro luthier from Madrid who started out as an apprentice at the age of twelve and set up his own workshop in El Rastro when he was twenty-four. In 1890, the first permanent base was at 2, Calle de Concepción Jerónima with a workshop and store, between Sol and La Latina, very close to today’s store.
He was one of the most outstanding guitar maker masters of his time and he gave birth to the called Escuela de Madrid de Constructores de Guitarra. Today, his descendants, the 5th generation, still manage the business.
Among the marvellous guitars that were born in this workshop, the Tablao Guitar stands out as well as the cedar soundboard. Andrés Segovia played his guitars at all his concerts. They have been rewarded several times and received many prizes such as the golden medal of Chicago Guitar Society (1962) or the golden one of the Madrid Crafthand Union (1972).
