Located in Malasaña, close to Gran Vía, this century-old chemist’s was already listed among the city’s chemist’s in 1833, when it was owned by Pedro Herranz. It became very popular when it was taken over by Dr. Garrido, who had his own laboratory to create remedies and masterful formulas. He was also a pioneer in pharmaceutical advertising.
This charming chemist’s stands out for its interior, featuring dark wood with arches decorated with gold garlands and a bust of Galen inside a medallion adorning the arch leading to the back room, a central counter made of wood and marble, surrounded by antique shelves painted in white.
Dr. Garrido sold the chemist’s in 1893, and several pharmacists took over until it finally came into the hands of Julián Conthe in the 1920s. When the Civil War broke out, Conthe was executed, and the premises were expropriated by the CNT, although it remained open to the public.
Today, his descendants continue to run the pharmacy after reclaiming it. The adjacent space has been converted into a herbal shop attached to the chemist’s, featuring modern furnishings.
