El Ángel del Jardín

This historic florist, the oldest in Madrid and located in the heart of the Barrio de las Letras, on the popular Calle de Huertas, first opened in around 1889, built on the site of the cemetery of the church of San Sebastian, where prominent figures such as Juan de Villanueva, Ventura Rodríguez and Lope de Vega are laid to rest. Known as El Jardín del Ángel, after several months of renovation, it reopened on 1st December 2020, under the new name of El Ángel del Jardín.

Currently run by botanist Elsa Valverde and florist Mercedes Rodríguez, this florist’s shop respects its historical past (for example, the oldest olive tree in Madrid is preserved in the garden by its entrance) and aesthetic, with its characteristic greenhouse, but incorporates innovative elements, such as a pretty vertical garden located on the back wall of the church of San Sebastian, which it adjoins.
