Just a stone’s throw from the iconic Puerta del Sol, you’ll find this legendary spot, home to some of the best patatas bravas in Madrid. In fact, Las Bravas® is credited with creating this iconic dish, along with its own unique salsa brava, a spicy sauce patented in 1959. The menu features everything from classic tapas to traditional Spanish pinchos and canapés.
Their famous salsa brava is still carefully handmade using only the finest natural ingredients. It has a perfectly balanced kick and a rich, complex flavour that pairs beautifully not just with potatoes, but also with Spanish omelettes and many other dishes.
The story of this beloved taberna began back in 1933, when it first opened as a wine cellar in El Callejón del Gato, serving quality wines and spirits to their customers.
After the Civil War, it was turned into a taberna, expanding its offer to include appetisers and larger sharing platters that started to become popular. After the creation of their famous spicy salsa, which they named brava precisely because of the kick it had, similar to the bravo bulls, in 1963 they opened a new place on Calle Espoz y Mina, which was a popular meeting place for decades.
In 1974, they opened new premises in Pasaje Mathéu, which are still open today alongside the restaurant at No. 3 Calle de Álvarez Gato.
