This long-established jewellery store first opened its doors in 1899 when José Granados acquired the López Hermanos jewellery store on Calle Carretas. Specialising in natural cultured pearls, imported from various parts of the world such as Japan, Australia, Tahiti, China, the Philippines and Indonesia, this store has been an official supplier to the Spanish Royal Family (even making the crown worn by Alfonso XII) and continue to have many aristocrats among their clientele.
After the death of José Granados, his widow took over the business, but it was not until 1909, when it was time to renew the shop’s license, that the jewellery shop was renamed Viuda de Granados. In the 1940s, the jewellery business passed into the hands of the couple's son, who expanded the business by opening a store on Calle Alcalá, opposite El Retiro Park. In 1975, the Sol neighbourhood of the city, which was where the majority of jewellery and silverware shops were concentrated at the beginning of the century, began to decline, and the shops on Calle Carretas started to close.
Today, the firm still has a jewellery store on Calle Alcalá, which is run by Enrique Granados, the third generation of this family, and they specialise in high-quality cultured pearls imported from around the world. Furthermore, in the Prosperidad neighbourhood, Enrique Granados' daughter runs Joyería Quílez, also specialising in pearls.
