Monument in memory of the victims of the Covid 19 pandemic

Opposite Cibeles Palace, on the traffic island at the beginning of the stretch that goes to Puerta del Sol, you’ll find this monument which pays tribute to all of the victims of the Covid pandemic. It was unveiled on 15 May 2020, the day of San Isidro, the city’s patron saint.

The prestigious architect Carlos Rubio Carvajal designed of this monument, which features a black steel cauldron, almost two metres in diameter, which sits on top of a prism, also made from steel,  supported by a granite plinth. A plaque in front of the monument reads “Your flame will never be extinguished in our hearts”.

After suffering damage within months of being unveiled, it was renovated, and since May 2022 it now stands on the island between Calle Alcalá and Plaza de Cibeles, following the completion of the remodelling work in this area.
