This hospital was opened in the Salamanca district in 1926 by King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia. A fruit of civil architecture from the beginning of the 20th century, the building was declared an artistic monument of cultural interest in 1999.
Designed by the architect, Luis de Landecho, the centre was originally called Escuela de Matronas y Casa de Salud Santa Cristina (Santa Cristina Midwives School and Women’s Hospital) and its purpose was to encourage women to go to a medical centre to give birth. In addition to helping women in labour, it was also a midwife teaching centre.
