Paseo de Recoletos

With an original route dating back to 1840, this is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Madrid due to the splendid trees and sculptures spread out along the entire route.

Since the 19th century, the Paseo de Recoletos has been a central boulevard and an extension of the Prado, as the road between Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza de Colón. It owes its name to a 16th century monastery of Recoletos monks which was located on the site of today’s National Library  and National Archaeological Museum, two of its most distinguished buildings. 

Along it, you can admire 19th centaury palaces which have been turned into important cultural centres, such as those that are home to Casa de América, the BBVA Foundation or the Mapfre Foundation, as well as immaculate gardens and historic cafés, such as the Café Gijón or terraces like that of the Café del Espejo. 

In the middle of the walkway, which is used to host some fairs throughout the year, there are several fountains and decorative statues.
