On 17 October 1815, the license to open the Santa Bárbara brewery on Calle Hortaleza was signed, which led to the alehouse of the same name. In 1900, the brewery's first beer office was opened. However, it was in 1966 when the alehouse in Plaza de Santa Bárbara was opened and it has remained unchanged ever since.
During the First Republic, Santa Bárbara was mentioned by Benito Pérez Galdós in one of his Episodios Nacionales.
Since the 1970s, the alehouse in Plaza de Santa Bárbara has become a regular haunt for labour lawyers, trade unionists, students and artists.
The bar is well-known for its good draught beer and for its tapas and individual portions, especially for its prawns. It also serves menus of the day made up of varied dishes of Spanish gastronomy.
