CaixaForum Madrid will host an exhibition that offers an intimate and unseen insight into Luis García-Berlanga (1921-2010) from 25 November to 23 May 2027. This is an unedited approach thanks to the cataloguing and digitalising of Berlanga’s personal archive, which will be made available to the public for the first time.
This exhibition offers a journey of discovery throughout the life of the filmmaker, his work and his international recognition as a key European creator in the 20th century. Through his different facets, the exhibition explores his historical context, his problems with censorship and such personal aspects as his fears of death, the future or women, turning them into recurrent themes in his film work.
With carefully staged film atmosphere, the exhibition invites visitors to travel through key scenes, such as an office, a film set, a 1950s cinema or a large falla from Valencia where films and characters from Berlanga’s iconic universe, characterised by satire, traditions, caricature and improvisation, are symbolically set on fire.
The exhibition will also boast a space for participative experimentation, designed as a small film class given by his son, José Luis García Berlanga. The tracking shot and sequence shot (key resources in the film-maker's technique) are used and visitors are invited to create their own tracking shot and interact directly with the camera.
