The Cuban choreographer and dancer, Lorena Flores will present a show on 11 October at the UMusic Hotel Teatro Albéniz that is a crossover of roots: flamenco, Afro-Cuban heritage and urban and contemporary dance.
Gitana en New York is a flamenco fusion show by Rafa Tena and the Lorena Flores Dance Company, that presents a stage performance that breaks down borders and connects cultures through movement and music. After coming to Madrid, the show will embark on a tour that will take it to cities like Zamora or the Thailand Dance Festival in Bangkok in 2027.
The show presents a symbolic and emotional journey between the island and other continents, with New York as a multicultural meeting point and a place of transit, from which to reflect on human exodus, migration and the constant transformation of identity.
Flamenco is presented as a living art form, capable of crossing borders without losing its essence, in a visually and emotionally charged production that combines choral scenes and solos of great expressive intensity, performed by eleven dancers on stage.
Music plays a key role, featuring an original soundtrack created by Juan Parrilla, Efraín Chibás and Rafa Tena, which is considered to be one of the fundamental pillars of the show’s artistic universe. Far from accompanying the action, the music inhabits it, drives it and transforms it.
The Cuban dancer, choreographer, and artistic director, Lorena Flores, is at the helm of Gitana en New York. Having studied at the Cuba–Canada Friendship Vocational School and Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba, she developed a solid professional career there as a solo dancer, participating in numerous international tours throughout Europe, America and Asia.
