As part of the Month of the Clown, the Rana Teatro & Goutas Teatro Company will be performing a show that reinterprets the classical theatre of the Spanish Golden Age short comical plays from a contemporary perspective on 23 and 24 September at the Teatro Circo Price.
The production combines clowning, acrobatics, live music and visual theatre to pay tribute to the travelling comedians who kept the stage tradition alive for centuries. The performance follows two travelling actors who are fleeing Spain as stowaways to an unknown destination.
With hunger as their travel companion and a repertoire of old numbers from the theatre courtyard as their only baggage, they both embark on a crossing that takes them across space and time. On the journey, they will face storms and encounters with pirates and they will transform their appearance constantly, combining the theatre, circus and film languages without ever losing the essence of roving and entertainment performers.
The show combines comedy, sattire, tenderness and physical theatre performance to offer an experience that connects the legacy of the Golden Age with the sensitivity of today’s audience, reviving the spirit of those travelling performers who took theatre around the villages.
The production is produced by Jaime Pastor from Spain, an actor, musician and director who studied at the Sorbonne Nouvelle and the Phillippe Gaulier School and has built his career with prestigious companies and productions, such as Slava’s Snowshow, in addition to collaborating with institutions, such as the Royal Opera of Spain, the Paris Opera, the European Parliament, Cirque du Soleil and the French Ministry of Culture.
Pastor is joined on stage by the Scottish performer, Hayleigh Smillie, a performer and creator who studied at the Codarts Conservatory in Rotterdam (Netherlands) and has worked with European dance and physical theatre groups. Since 2025, she has led her own company, Rana Teatro, which specialises in shows that combine dance, clowning and circus arts.
