The Centro Danza Matadero - CDM will host the world première of the latest show by the María Pagés Company from 25 September to 4 October (Fridays to Sundays), which brings together personal memory and the flamenco choreographic language to trace an intimate and universal journey.
The show is inspired by the biography of María Pagés, an artist marked by her roots in 1970s Seville. Brought up in the heart of a conservative family with deep religious traditions and devoted to the Virgin of the Snow and the Church of Santa María la Blanca, the creator embarked on a decisive journey to Madrid at the age of 15, a move that would mark the beginning of her life and artistic career.
That move, which acts as the show’s narrative backbone, takes on an almost mythical quality. In a black Citroën, driven by her mother, Doña Masu, the young Pagés leaves home accompanied by her grandmother, Doña Maruja Mestres Pintó, who suddenly starts speaking in Catalonian (her mother tongue) to the teenager’s surprise. This episode that symbolizes the intersection of identities and the cultural wealth that runs through the show.
A choreographic narrative is created that explores the artist’s sentimental legacy, focusing on that trip from Seville to Madrid, which is understood not merely as a physical move, but as the gateway to the world. Through flamenco, María Pagés turns her personal story into a stage reflection on memory, identity and the journey between roots and destiny.
María Pagés is one of the great flamenco artists in Spain. Over the years, her company has performed on the world’s best and most prestigious stages with productions, such as Yo, Carmen, Self-Portrait, Flamenco and Poetry or Utopia. She has also won many awards, such as the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts 2015, the National Dance Prize 2002 in the category of Creation or the Public Award at the Jerez Festival 2012.
