The Tempest. The Garden of Forking Paths. Avelino Sala

Avelino Sala is an artist from Asturias and in his latest exhibition, at CentroCentro, he takes us on a journey through his artwork as a kind of exercise in critical and poetic resistance. The pieces selected display tensions between threat and fragility, between inherited symbols and new imaginaries, between gestures of power and the cracks through which other narratives emerge. The exhibition runs from 16 April to 20 September.

The Tempest is not just an exhibition, but a parallel visual narrative, a kind of poetic and political map that, through disarmed symbols and recovered stories, invites us to imagine other forms of resistance. It is here, at the intersection between criticism and beauty, where the discursive and aesthetic power of Sala's work can be most fully appreciated.

Avelino Sala (Gijón, 1972) is an artist and editor of Sublime magazine. His work as an artist has led him to question cultural and social reality from a poetic perspective with a strong critical focus. By continuously exploring social imagery, Sala aims to highlight painful points, demonstrating the power of art as a space for experimentation and the creation of new worlds. Sala is a leading Spanish artist when it comes to using art as a vehicle for resistance, addressing sensitive and relevant topics such as migration, contemporary dislocation, environmental crisis and the paradoxes of capitalism.

In 2007, he was awarded the Artport International Video Award in Basel (Switzerland) by UNESCO and the New York Foundation for the Arts, and in 2010, he received the VAD Prize at the Girona Video Art Festival. He also became a fellow at the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome and in 2012 at the Le Lait Art Centre in Albi, France. In 2024, he was the representative for the Spanish pavilion at the Malta Biennale. Currently, he is presenting his work at the Europalia Biennale at the S.M.A.K Contemporary Art Centre in Ghent, Belgium, and at the MEIAC Art Centre in Badajoz.
