The Canal Foundation will host an exhibition in the Mateo Inurria 2 Hall from 4 February to 3 May, which traces the evolution of street art from its origins to the present day through more than sixty original works by leading national and international artists.
In recent decades, street art has become established as one of the most influential visual and recognisable languages of contemporary art. From its beginnings with the first signatures or tags on the streets of Philadelphia and New York at the end of the 1960s to its international expansion, its has achieved worldwide recognition.
The exhibition is divided into five historical periods, from the early practices of self-affirmation linked to graffiti to the progressive sophistication of today’s languages, techniques and discourses, with works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, SEEN, Blek le Rat, JR, Invader, Os Gêmeos, Suso33, EL XUPET NEGRE or PichiAvo, among others. These five sections will be joined by a monographic section devoted to Banksy, a key figure to understand the media and symbolic dimension of 21st century street art.
