The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum will host an exhibition from 23 February to 3 May that forms part of the Inside and Outside the Frame, the ninth edition of the Kora programme curated by Rocío de la Villa, which presents an annual exhibition conceived from a gender perspective. On this occasion, it focuses on the work of Irma Álvarez-Laviada with a selection of more than thirty pieces created in the past decade, on display alongside paintings from the Museum’s collection.
The creations of Irma Álvarez-Laviada (Gijón, 1978), made out of industrial materials intended for practical use, are placed symbolically between the inside and outside of the pictorial frame. Through them, the artist reflects on inclusions and exclusions within the modern tradition of Western art.
The artist’s work also approaches geometrical abstraction from a gender perspective. The attributes of male and female stereotypes are questioned in works that engage with tradition in order to deconstruct it using creative processes governed by repetition and their variations.
