The director and choreographer, Mario Bermúdez will be presenting a modern dance show on 29 and 30 November in Nave 11 at the Centro Danza Matadero - CDM, which provides an in-depth immersion into human contradictions in pursuit of inner freedom, which won the Talía Award for Best Choreography in 2024.
The piece is performed by Alessia Sinato, Andrea Pérez, Catherine Coury, Marilisa Gallicchio, Jeremy Alberge and Mario Bermúdez himself, and takes Dante's Inferno and the universal symbolism of initiatory journeys as its starting points.
The production is not merely a performance. It is an experience. Spectators are invited to rise to a transformative challenge, immersing themselves fully in the show and empathising with the seven dancers. The show masterfully navigates between the notions of community and individuality, revealing the liberating power of our nakedness in each movement. Each performer embarks on a personal odyssey towards his/her most intuitive and animal essence on a path that forces them to confront their darkest sides: their doubts, fears and weaknesses.
However, in this descent into the depths of oneself, a powerful force of unity and awareness emerges. The seven dancers, acting as a single traveller, become a mirror and landscape for each other, discovering that true freedom can be found even in the darkest and most unknown corners of our inner selves.
Mario Bermúdez is a choreographer who studied at the Andalusian Dance Centre in Seville. He was a member of the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv (Israel) and founded the Marcat Dance ensemble with Catherine Coury in 2016.
The ensemble has won many awards, such as Best Show of the Year at the Lorca Awards 2023 and 2022 and the PAD Awards 2021 and 2020, Best Original Music at the PAD Awards 2020, Best Male and Female Performance at the MAX Awards 2023, the Lorca Awards 2023 and 2022 and the PAD Awards 2021, the Best Choreography Award at the Lorca Awards 2023 and the Escenarios de Sevilla Awards 2019. Since 2020, he has also been promoting the Vildanza Festival, having taken over as artistic director of this event, which is held every summer in Vilches (Jaen).
