The Royal Swedish Ballet will be performing a contemporary interpretation of William Shakespeare’s drama from 7 to 10 May 2026 at the Teatro Real, choreographed by the Swedish dancer, Mats Ek.
Created in 2013 to celebrate the company's 240th anniversary, this version breaks with tradition by inverting the classic title and placing Juliet at the centre of the story, highlighting her leading role in the narrative.
Instead of using Prokofiev's famous score, Mats Ek draws on a carefully selected collection of pieces by Tchaikovsky, creating a distinct sound that is more in line with his personal choreographic approach. The stage design and costumes by Magdalena Åberg, along with the lighting by Linus Fellbom, create a somber and minimalist scenery that amplifies the play’s emotional toll.
Far from being conventional symbols (the balcony, swords or poison), Ek's choreography delves into the intimacy of the characters, highlighting the adolescent fragility of the lovers and the complexity of their feelings. The result is a modern and moving interpretation of the tragedy, focusing on the dilemmas of youth faced with social norms and expectations.
