EuroBasket 2029 - Men’s European Basketball Championship

The Spanish Basketball Federation and the Community of Madrid have been chosen to host one of the four groups in the First Phase (that of the National Team) and the entire Final Phase of the Men’s European Basketball Championship (EuroBasket). The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will be the venue for the opening  and the Movistar Arena will host the rest of the competition, which will be played in summer 2029 (specific dates to be confirmed).

Madrid will host 15 matches from one of the groups (in which the Spanish National Team will be playing) from the First Phase and all of the Round of 16 matches, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the entire fight for the medals.  Slovenia, Estonia and Greece will be the venue of the other three groups in the initial phase of the 43rd Eurobasket.

All of the matches will be played at the Movistar Arena, a venue of worldwide prestige which hosted 207 events in 2023 and was the fourth most important venue according to Pollstar Magazine, with the exception of the matches that will be played on the opening day of the tournament. The opening event of EuroBasket 2029 will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, with up to 80,000 spectators who will be able to witness the start of this championship in which the best continental basketball will be played, setting a new attendance record for a FIBA match.

In total, between the World and European Men's and Women's Championships, Spain has hosted a total of nine championships. The 1973, 1997 and 2007 Men's Eurobasket (in which the qualifying rounds were played at the Movistar Arena) join the one held in 2029 and the World Cups held in 1986 and 2014, in which the final classification was also played at the Movistar Arena.

In the Women’s category, Valencia hosted Eurobasket 2021 and Tenerife hosted the World Cup 2018 three years earlier. In 1987, the province of Cadiz hosted the Eurobasket, the first major Women’s Basketball event held in Spain; and the Pre-Olympics were held in Madrid in 2008.
