The soprano, Lisette Oropesa leads a concerto version of the least known opera by Giuseppe Verdi on 10 and 14 February at the Teatro Real Written by Andrea Maffei and based on The Bandits (Die Räuber) by Friedrich Schiller.
Conducted by the Italian choirmaster, Francesco Lazillota, it tells a dark, tragic and passionate tale, in which family betrayal is combined with impossible love, violence and failed redemption. Premièred in 1847 in London (United Kingdom), it revolves around two brothers who are very different: Carlo is noble but impulsive and Francesco is cruel and manipulative.
Carlo Moor, son of Count Moor, has led a disorderly but not malicious life. He is in Leipzig (Germany) awaiting his father’s forgiveness. However, his younger brother, Francesco, wishes to take the title and the inheritance. To do so, he sends a false letter to the Count, portraying Carlo as a criminal. Believing the lie, the Count disowns his son.
The devastated Carlo believes that there is no redemption and in desperation, he becomes the leader of a gang of bandits, determined to fight injustice with their own hands. Meanwhile Francesco sets his final plan into motion: he fakes the death of his father and buries him in a tomb. Amalia, who loves Carlo and does not believe in his supposed corruption, is also trapped in the castle under the vigilance of Francesco, who is in love with her. However, Carlo secretly returns....
