The city of Madrid is hosting the XXX edition of the Ibero-American Summit that will take place in the last quarter of 2026. A summit considered especially significant as it is the thirtieth edition and coincides with the 35th anniversary of the first ever summit held in Mexico in 1991.
The city is playing host to one of the most important political forums in the field of cooperation between Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries in the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas. An event that brings together in the same space the Heads of State and Government of the countries that make up Ibero-America with the aim of strengthening collaboration and analysing common challenges and encouraging sustainable development in the region.
This is the fourth time, since the first summit was held in Guadalajara (Mexico) in 1991, that Spain is hosting an Ibero-American Summit. It first hosted this event in Madrid in 1992, then in 2005 in Salamanca and most recently in 2012 in Cádiz. This annual Summit became biannual after 2014. The most recent one in Cuenca, Ecuador, highlighted the importance of sustainability, innovation and social inclusion as pillars of regional development. Ahead of the 2026 Summit, Spain intends to encourage a period of reflection on the working methods of the Ibero-American system to gain efficiency and improve people’s quality of life.
The Ibero-American Summits encompass the 22 Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal, Andorra and Spain. In them, Heads of State and Government discuss an agenda based on common interests through a Programme of Action and four-year action plans for Ibero-American Cooperation (PACCI).
