El Greco. Santo Domingo el Antiguo

From 18 February to 15 June, the Prado Museum will be exhibiting most of the works that El Greco painted between 1577 and 1579 for the Monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo. The set of paintings was divided up in 1830, and this is the first time they have been seen together since then

Sponsored by Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado and curated by Leticia Ruiz, head of the Spanish Renaissance Painting Department at the Prado Museum, this exhibition focuses on the most important commission received by the painter until that moment. A commission that included an altarpiece structure for the main altar, whose canvases are currently dispersed in different locations.

Through an agreement reached with the Art Institute of Chicago, the painting of The Assumption of the Virgin is returning to visit the Prado Museum after more than a century. This painting can be seen alongside others preserved in the Museum’s collection, as well as other paintings from the lateral altarpiece of the church.
