Paolo Veronese (1528-1588)

From 27 May to 21 September, the Prado Museum is putting on an exhibition of work by the Italian painter Paolo Veronese. An exhibition that highlights his importance in the Museum’s collection, given his influence in Spain during the Golden Age, where his work was extremely popular among royalty and collectors. 

Curated by Miguel Falomir, director of the Prado Museum, and Enrico Maria Dal Pozzolo, professor at the Università di Verona, and sponsored by Fundación AXA, this exhibition concludes the process of studying and re-evaluating the Prado’s collection of Venetian Renaissance painting. Undoubtedly one of the finest collections in the world, having put on exhibitions such as The Bassanos in Golden Age Spain  (2001, Titian (2003), Tintoretto (2007) and Lorenzo Lotto. Portraits (2018).

Three main themes will be addressed throughout the exhibition. It will look at the creative process of Paolo Veronese and the way he managed his workshop, from his initial sketches right up to the production of oil paintings in his bottega (work room). It will then explore his immense talent as a capobottega (the head of a workshop), an area in which he even surpassed other great artists of the day such as Titian or Tintoretto. Lastly, it focuses on his ability to represent the aspirations of the Venetian elite, which can be seen in his cosmopolitan style that seduced the European courts.
